Dear Friends,

I’m excited to share three more new tiny house plans, available exclusively through Four Lights Tiny House Co. All three can be mounted on wheels or a foundation and, in response to popular demand, two have beds downstairs.

The Marie Colvin

One of my highly anticipated larger house designs, The Marie Colvin is now available as both a shell and a furnished plan. This house boasts a beautiful bump-out dining nook/study, a downstairs bedroom, two lofts, a kitchen with ample storage, a 2'-6" x 6'-6" bathroom, a 9'-6" x 10'-0" great room and more than 70 square feet of storage. The furnished plan sets come with a main floor plan, a loft floor plan, an electrical plan, trailer specifications with alternate pier foundation plan, pertinent detail elevations and all of the integral component plans, including the blueprints for furniture designed specifically to fit in a tiny house. READ MORE

The Gifford

The Gifford is the same design as my own house. This is the furnished version of the plan that was previously only available as a shell. All of my furnished plan sets come with a main floor plan, a loft floor plan, an electrical plan, and pertinent detail elevations, plus all of the integral component plans, including the blueprints for furniture designed specifically to fit in a tiny house. The Weller

The Weller is one of my first tiny houses with a bed downstairs. This is the furnished version of the bump-out plan that was previously only available as a shell. The furnished plan sets come with a main floor plan, a loft floor plan, an electrical plan, several pertinent detail elevations and all of the integral component plans, including the blueprints for furniture designed specifically to fit in a tiny house. READ MORE

New Workshops

I've also been busily refining my Tiny House Building Workshops into a visual and interactive curriculum that’s great for all levels of experience (or no experience at all). New demonstrations and models ensure an exciting learning experience for all. If you live in North America, there's probably a Weekend Workshop coming to a city near you.

A special launch for my new workshops

The first workshop, coming up in February and located in Northern California, is particularly dear to me because I’ll be able to show everyone my own tiny house. There will also be a unique opportunity available to all workshop attendees to help a family build their tiny house in the three days following the workshop. This is a great opportunity to try out your new skills and get hands-on building experience! Wild and Scenic

I recently had the honor of traveling to Nevada City for the Wild and Scenic Film Festival to attend a work-in-progress screening of Tiny: The Movie. Four Lights Tiny House Company’s own Mark Sowers and our Tiny House Village project manager, Yohan Morgan, accompanied me. We all agreed that the movie is both inspiring and beautiful. I'm proud to have played a small part in it and I'm proud to know a lot of the folks who make it so good. Dee Williams (Portland Alternative Dwellings) and Derek "Deek" Diedricksen (Relax Shacks) will surely be nominated for Academy Awards for their parts. I think all of us, including the film's creators, Christopher Smith and Merete Mueller, should arrive at the red carpet in a tiny house on wheels with black-light underglow and shiny, spinning hubcaps (Deek's a rapper too, you know).

Our Tiny House Village

While in Nevada City, we also met with renowned co-housing architects, Charles Durrett and Kathryn McCamant, and toured their exquisitely designed Nevada City Co-housing project on the edge of town. We wanted to pick their brains about the financial and logistical aspects of a tiny house village and get inspiration and ideas as we flesh out our own plan.

Right now we're interested in property in downtown Forestville, CA. The idillic property pictured sits majestically on a gentle south-facing, 8-acre slope. Our intention is to build our Tiny House Village on a beautiful lot within walking distance of amenities and the Forestville lot fits the bill perfectly.

You rock! These are great plans and you deserve all the kudos you can get!! I applaud you for breaking away to expand. I have always lived by the rule that “the only difference between a rut and a grave is the length”.
I will continue to follow your success as long as you continue to share it with us.
Your fan, Sandi

I signed up for the newsletter but didn’t receive the 10% coupon?
Also, I am so excited to be building a tiny house in the near future! I love the idea of the tiny house village! Wish I could be a part of it but, I’m Canadian… so no sunny California for me :(
Best of luck! I’ll stay updated nonetheless.

Jay – Are there any materials cost estimates on your new designs available?

Jennifer:

Hi Jay – what do you think about leading a workshop to build a village in the city landscapes. I work in Flint, MI and we have BLOCKS of property (abandoned or neglected) which could serve as landscapes upon which to build mini villages within the city? Any interest?

I live in the Philippines where millions of people live in a myriad of forms of tiny houses. There is nothing surprising about tiny houses here.

As to villages I suggest you look into Gawad Kalinga a Filipino organization that has built 1000’s of villages and is slowly turning these villages into sustainable organic farms … see http://www.gk1world.com/ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gawad_Kalinga

I am enjoying your new web space a great
deal. I my self am looking for the rite tiny
house for my 9 year old son and my self.
He is quite taken by the idea of his own
loft. Do you have a 20 foot house on
Wheels with two lofts? I had open hart
Sergerie two years ago, and also cancer
Sergerie. It left me broke and in chronic
Pain. Your tiny house’s are a salution

Being permanently disabled, I welcome these new plans that have a bedroom on the first floor. Stairs are no longer friends w/ me and ladders are even worse. LOL! Although I didn’t see any mention of it, does this new company of yours include the option of purchasing a tiny home already built, like your former Tumbleweed company did?

Jonah Whitten:

Jay,
Thanks for setting high standards for tiny house design and aesthetics. I noticed that the roof overhangs on the Gifford go beyond the road limit. How does that work out if your mounting on a trailer?

Jomichele:

Base weight is a concern for me. I’ll like to keep it at 3000 lbs or less, so I can use a mid-size SUV to haul it around. I imagine the trailer itself contributes a great deal to the weight. Are there lighter options that are realistically priced? Have you any plans or insight regarding the use of the ‘honeycomb’ panels such as these: http://www.superhoneycomb.com/product_detail.html

Can I say “pretty please” to have it?
